The factors relating to manufacturing of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) play a role in the outcomes of TKA. Technological advancements over the years had a major impact on how TKA implants and surgical techniques are conducted with more involvement of manufacturers in the process. Starting with the materials received from the supplier, the manufacturer prepares the implant for the surgical procedures and supplies the surgical protocols for structuring the cuts so that the manufacturer’s method matches with the patient’s anatomy of the preoperative computed tomography (CT) scan based on determined positioning guidelines (Elbuluk et al., J Arthroplast. 37(8S):S849–S851, 2022). In this work, we will provide a review of the role that manufacturing plays in TKA procedures with a focus on manufacturing factors that can impact the outcomes of TKA, commercially available TKA implants for partial and total knee arthroplasties with their specifications and manufacturers, possible complications that may be seen upon using manufacturing techniques and how to resolve these issues, and the possible impact of recent technologies on TKA. Suggestions for potential future research directions of TKA and related considerations are outlined based on recent advancements in robotics and additive manufacturing.
