Abstract
Corner stores, or nanostores are small business that are ever-present in the landscape of Latin America cities and towns. These small businesses are associated to informality and with processed and other highly unhealthy foods. Their role and potential in terms of food security has been always neglected. In this preliminary work, we investigate the dynamics of these businesses in peri-urban areas of central Colombia, specifically in terms of sourcing of fruits and vegetables. For this purpose, we surveyed over 80 store owners in the Sabana Centro region of Colombia about their sourcing and sales habits. The results show that the inefficiencies of the logistics processes discourage store owners to sell these products. The results also suggest that having nearby and reliable sources of fruits and vegetables can motivate store owners to increase availability of such products.
