Early childhood is one of the most influential developmental life stages. Attainments at this stage will have implications for the quality of life children experience as they transition to adulthood (COAG 2009; COSDH 2007; Maggi et al. 2005). Children residing in remote Australia are exposed to disadvantages that can contribute to developmental delays and resultant poorer education and health outcomes. Remoteness is defined in the Australian context by geographical location through the Australian Standard Geographical Classification - Remoteness Areas (ASGC-RA). Communities in far west NSW are identified as RA3 - outer regional, RA4 - remote, and RA5 - very remote (ABS 2013). In addition, remote locations have been identified as sharing common characteristics that include higher levels of health risk and disease burdens, limited access to health services, health workforce shortages and socio-economic disadvantage (McGrail and Humphreys 2009).
