This paper investigates the nonlinear inductance model of a salient Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Machine. In particular, the computation of the phase inductances as function of
the rotor position under different load conditions is performed through Finite Element
Analysis so to enable the numerical simulation of sensorless rotor position detection
algorithms. Also, a sensitivity analysis is carried out in order to evaluate the effects of
geometric variation on the inductances and on the accuracy of the estimated position.
