Komatiites are high extent melts of mantle peridotite whose origin has been attributed to
different tectonic environments such as mantle plumes and subduction zones. Previous work
has suggested that komatiitic melts are generated at pressures> 5 GPa, consistent with a
mantle plume hypothesis. More recent work on komatiites has shown that high pre-eruptive
water contents are needed to reproduce observed pyroxene compositions in the Barberton
and Commondale komatiites, which is more consistent with a subduction related origin …
