Young People in Social Media–Selected Aspects of Functioning of Polish and Russian Students in the E-network Natalia Shurlakova Monika Wojtkowiak Social media can be treated on the one hand as a specific social phenomenon; on the other hand, as a particular dimension of human activity. The social media has become the means of communication and a place of generating contents, as well as a part of life, especially for young generations. The article is an attempt to present the young people’s activity in social media in the Internet. A general presentation of the main portals of that type was made, operating in Poland and Russia, taking into account the similarities and differences between them. The main part of the article is the presentation of several aspects of functioning of students from both countries in the Internet, which has been illustrated with respondents’ answers and selected results of the research. The presented contents were categorized according to three main sources of problems: 1. Questions about what the Internet and social media are for the young people, 2. What features the Internet and social media have, according to their opinion, and finally 3. Bringing awareness to the selected phenomena, which can be disturbing. Because of relatively small (186 people) research group, the obtained data cannot be an exemplification that gives the comparison of the image of the phenomenon in both countries; however, they must represent a certain voice in the discussion about the role of the Internet in the life of young generations.
