Gentrification can be broadly defined as the process of transforming lower-and working-
class inner-city housing areas into middle-and upper-class neighborhoods. My study
focuses on the mechanisms of this process in post-socialist Eastern Europe, highlighting the
similarities and differences to capitalist societies. I suggest that in order to understand
gentrification in Eastern Europe and especially in Romania, one has to pay close attention to
