A hearer mentally processes an utterance by identifing the action characteristics of the
linguistic means used by the speaker (cf. Ehlich & Rehbein 1986: 104 et seqq.). Guided by
discourse knowledge and by the action characteristics of the linguistic means, the hearer
tries to reconstruct the overall plan underlying the speech action of the speaker (cf. Rehbein
1976, 1977: 185).
