Antiphospholipid antibodies are directed against plasma proteins with affinity for anionic
phospholipids. Autoantibodies against many plasma proteins have been described; this
chapter reviews the evidence that these plasma proteins, eg β 2-glycoprotein I, play a role in
the clinical manifestations of antiphospholipid syndrome (APS). Moreover, the chapter
discusses why these proteins become prothrombotic when the autoantibodies are present.
