The observation of multifinality and equifinality in the development of psychopathology has long been a source of intrigue to psychologists (Cicchetti & Rogosch, 1996). In the case of the former, it has been observed that the same environmental input can have a number of different outcomes depending on the individual. For instance, although it is noted that environmental stress contributes to a range of psychiatric disorders, including major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, only a subset of individuals exposed to such stress will actually go on to develop disorders. Moreover, when disorder does occur, some individuals appear to react to stress with externalizing behaviors, whereas others develop internalizing problems. Further, some individuals appear to be strongly impacted by environmental stress, whereas others exhibit resilience and achieve positive outcomes in such environments
