Nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP) engines use a nuclear reactor to heat up hydrogen to high
temperatures. Thrust is generated as the hydrogen is ejected at high velocity through a
nozzle. NTP has the potential of reducing travel times for deep space missions, such as to
Mars. The United States studied NTP early in the space age and the National Aeronautics
and Space Administration (NASA) is currently revisiting the potential of the technology to
enable its missions.
