Higher grain sterility was observed in Aus than in Boro rice. Late planted T. aman rice had
more sterile grains due to low temperature at the reproductive stage associated with
incomplete panicle emergence. Early planted Boro rice also suffered from low temperature
at the reproductive stage resulting high grain sterility. In 1990 Boro field observations
revealed very high grain sterility (40-90%) due to unusual fall of temperature in March
resulting crop failure in several regions of Bangladesh.
