This thesis is a historical review of Indonesia's curriculum and practice as seen through the
works of Kartini (1878-1904) and Ki Hadjar Dewantara (1889-1959), whose ideas colored
and influenced the development of Indonesia's educational system. Although Kartini and Ki
Hadjar are responsible for tremendous improvements in the national education system, the
origins of their ideas have never been scrutinized by Indonesian educators.
