The objective of the research is to develop problem based learning in large classes for Tarumanagara student who were learning to interpret photographs in design photo course. The problem based learning aims not only to identify composition and aesthetics but also to know deeper about social, culture and photographer’s biography. The research conducted in 50 student form visual communication design, fifth semester, Tarumanagara Universtiy, Jakarta.

In this action research, the research questions is how to design and develop problem based learning as a method to interpret photographic in large classes in visual communication design? The designs of problem based learning models in the first cycle will be created as follows (1) prepare the learning materials and give urban theme as a problems, prepare Barrett model critics for delivery and assignments, and delivery cycles from low taxonomies to high taxonomies,(2) delivery materials and assestments, presented the problems and brainstrorming (3) describe individual and group assignments (4) fasilitates student to interpret photographs (5) supervise student to combine data and discuss sub theme (6) provide feedback and summative evaluation. The second cycle use only the fifth and the sixth steps.
