This study introduces a new and previously unconsidered fast abiotic formation of Mn (IV)
oxides. We report photochemically assisted fast abiotic oxidation of Mn2+ (aq) to Mn (IV)(s)
by superoxide radicals generated from nitrate photolysis. This photochemical pathway
generates randomly stacked layered birnessite (δ-MnO2) nanosheets.
