Physical modeling of tsunamis generated by three‐dimensional deformable granular landslides

F Mohammed, HM Fritz - Journal of Geophysical Research …, 2012 - Wiley Online Library
Tsunamis generated by deformable granular landslides are physically modeled in a three‐
dimensional tsunami wave basin based on the generalized Froude similarity. The dynamic
landslide impact characteristics were controlled by means of a novel pneumatic landslide
generator. The wave amplitudes, periods, and wavelengths are related to the landslide
parameters at impact with the landslide Froude number being a dominant parameter.
Between 1 and 15% of the landslide kinetic energy at impact is converted into the wave train …

Physical modelling of tsunamis generated by three-dimensional deformable granular landslides on planar and conical island slopes

BC McFall, HM Fritz - Proceedings of the Royal Society …, 2016 - royalsocietypublishing.org
Tsunamis generated by landslides and volcanic island collapses account for some of the
most catastrophic events recorded, yet critically important field data related to the landslide
motion and tsunami evolution remain lacking. Landslide-generated tsunami source and
propagation scenarios are physically modelled in a three-dimensional tsunami wave basin.
A unique pneumatic landslide tsunami generator was deployed to simulate landslides with
varying geometry and kinematics. The landslides were generated on a planar hill slope and …
