Intralysosomal iron powerfully synergizes oxidant-induced cellular damage. The iron
chelator, desferrioxamine (DFO), protects cultured cells against oxidant challenge but
pharmacologically effective concentrations of this drug cannot readily be achieved in vivo.
DFO localizes almost exclusively within the lysosomes following endocytic uptake,
