UWB 기술은 20 년 전 근거리 무선통신 기술로 화려하게 등장하였으나, Wi-Fi 등의 경쟁 기술에 밀려 관심에서 멀어져 갔다. 하지만 UWB 기술을 이용하면 무선기기 간에 거리를 측정하는 것이 가능하다는 특징으로 인해 최근 재조명되게 되었다. 특히, NXP, Qorvo 등에서 UWB 칩을 출시하였고, 삼성과 애플 스마트폰에 UWB 기술이 탑재됨으로써 본격적으로 대중화되기 시작하였다. 향후 자동차, 스마트 공장, 스마트 홈 등 위치기반의 다양한 분야에 UWB 기술이 스마트폰과 연동되어 사용될 전망이다. 이와 같이 다양한 분야에서 UWB 기술의 중요성이 높아지고 있지만, 아직까지도 최신 UWB 의 측위기술의 원리와 특성에 대한 연구자료가 부족한 상황이다. 이에 본 논문에서는 독자들이 최신 UWB 측위 기술을 체계적으로 이해하는데 도움을 주고자 UWB 측위기술의 원리를 설명하고, 이를 바탕으로 최신 연구개발 및 상용화 동향을 제시하고자 한다.

Abstract

Ultra-wideband (UWB) technology appeared as a short-range wireless communication technology 20 years ago, but competing technologies, such as Wi-Fi, attracted more interest. However, UWB technology has recently been re-evaluated because it makes it possible to measure the distance between wireless devices. In particular, UWB chips were released by NXP and Qorvo, and, as Samsung and Apple began installing UWB technology in smartphones, it began to be popularized. It is expected that UWB technology will be used in connection with smartphones in various location-based fields, such as automobiles, smart factories, and smart homes. Although the importance of UWB technology is increasing in various fields, as described above, the research on the principles and characteristics of the latest UWB positioning technology has been inadequate. Therefore, to help readers systematically understand the latest UWB positioning technology, the principle of UWB positioning technology is explained, and the latest research and development, as well as commercialization trends, are described.
