Simulations and theory predict that long electron and positron beams may under favorable
conditions self-modulate in plasmas. We report on the progress of experiments studying the
self-modulation instability in plasma wakefield experiments at FACET. The experimental
results obtained so far, while not being fully conclusive, appear to be consistent with the
presence of the self-modulation instability.

We report on the progress of experiments studying the self-modulation instability in plasma wakefield experiments at FACET. The experimental results obtained so far, while not being fully conclusive, appear to be consistent with the presence of the self-modulation instability.
