Abstract
In psychology, subjective well-being can be assessed mainly from two approaches: hedonic and eudaimonic. Hedonic well-being refers to life satisfaction and positive and negative affect, and eudaimonic well-being refers to the search for meaning and good living. The Positive and Negative Experiences Scale (SPANE) assesses the frequency of different emotional responses and measures hedonic well-being. This study aimed to analyze the psychometric properties of the SPANE in a sample of Colombian adolescents belonging to the Criminal Responsibility System. The sample consisted of 776 participants (M = 16.28, SD = 1.08, females = 24.2%). Reliability analysis and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were performed. Construct validity was assessed by correlations between the SPANE and mood, emotional intelligence, and prosocial behavior measures. Through linear regressions, predictive validity was assessed; positive and negative experiences were used as predictor variables for life satisfaction and emotional symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. The results corroborated the two dimensions of the original scale. The reliability of the subscales presented values above .80, and the goodness-of-fit indices of the FCA were adequate (X2 (1,53) = 224.79, IFI = 94, TLI = .95, CFI = .95, RMSEA = .065 CI90% (.056, .074); also, invariance by gender was observed. The relationship of the SPANE subscales with emotional states, emotional intelligence, and emotional symptoms was evidenced. It was also observed that Positive and Negative Experiences predict life satisfaction and depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms. In conclusion, satisfactory reliability, factorial, construct, and criterion validity were evidenced. The observed results indicate that the SPANE may be useful in assessing adolescent offenders’ positive and negative emotional experiences. It is suggested to conduct verifications in larger samples and with different populations.
