The agro-climatic condition of Rajasthan is arid and semi arid having dry and drought prone

Under uncertain rainfall and frequent draught the livestock farming especially goat rearing occupy a primary source of livelihood for small and marginal farmers. Goats are largely reared under traditional management due to lower socioeconomic status of goat keepers. Goats are adaptable to varying agro-climatic, feeding conditions and production systems. It is the need of hour to develop scientific management practices for goat rearing and to evaluate the productivity under field conditions. Since long time, need has been realized to carryout improvement and/or conservation program addressing the local/regional problems and resources. The present investigation was under taken to understand various aspects of goat rearing and their status in the rural economy.
Jakhrana is large sized dairy goat with good potential for milk production. Name of this breed is derived from its origin place ie Jakhrana village, Behror Tehsil, Alwar districts of Rajasthan (Rai et. al, 2001). More than 90% goats in this village are true to the breed. These goats are also found in 15-20 km periphery of Jakhrana village including adjoining parts of Mahendragarh district of Haryana.
