Brinjal (Solanum melongena Linnaeus) is considered as a “King of vegetables” originated
from India where a wide range of wild types and land races occur (Thompson and Kelly,
1957) and is now grown as a vegetable throughout the tropical, sub-tropical and warm
temperate areas of the world. In Gujarat, the total area under brinjal is about 0.76 lakh
hectares with annual production of 14.77 lakh metric tonnes (Anonymous, 2015).
