Main purpose of this study is to increase our understanding about the feelings of
underachievers related to their underachieving. Six focus groups were conducted with
students from grades 7-8. Discussions are analyzed via qualitative content analysis. In
addition to definition of underachievement four categories were defined: self-pity, relations
with family, teachers and classmates (friends). Sorrow and shame were frequently
highlighted by participants.
