Sound generation by turbulent premixed flames

A Haghiri, M Talei, MJ Brear… - Journal of Fluid …, 2018 - cambridge.org
This paper presents a numerical study of the sound generated by turbulent, premixed
flames. Direct numerical simulations (DNS) of two round jet flames with equivalence ratios of
0.7 and 1.0 are first carried out. Single-step chemistry is employed to reduce the
computational cost, and care is taken to resolve both the near and far fields and to avoid
noise reflections at the outflow boundaries. Several significant features of these two flames
are noted. These include the monopolar nature of the sound from both flames, the …

Sound generation by turbulent pre-mixed flames

JA Chillery - Applied Acoustics, 1975 - Elsevier
Previous work on noise generation by small open burner stabilised turbulent pre-mixed
flames, performed elsewhere, showed that such a flame may be represented acoustically as
an assembly of monopole sound sources distributed throughout the reaction zone of the
flame. Over a limited frequency range a strong correlation was observed between the far
field sound pressure and the first time derivative of the heat release rate in the flame. The
latter quantity was measured by monitoring the emission intensity of free radicals present in …
