Materials and methods.--A population of individ-ually marked (toe clipped) common lizards
was studied during 1978 and 1979 in a 52 mx 36 m study plot located in the Belgian
national nature reserve" de Kalmthoutse heide"(Kalmthout (51025'N-4025'E), province of

March through Oct. 1979. Sampling days were grouped into half-monthly intervals. During both years, I marked all resident adults and subadults (lizards born during the preceding activity season). The marked juveniles (born during the current activity season) represent an unknown fraction of the total number alive.
