Techniques are described for detecting when background radiation has impacted a qubit
without the need for additional hardware. In particular, a quantum system may operate
readout hardware to read the state of a qubit in addition to operating the readout hardware
to detect when an impact has occurred. Readouts from impacted qubits can then be ignored
