This chapter provides an overview of the various types of telephone-based psychological interventions that have been used in the management of severe obesity. The types of telephone-based psychological interventions for severe obesity include: cognitive-behavioral telephone interventions; health-coaching telephone interventions; and motivational interviewing telephone intervention. The chapter discusses the benefits of telephone-based interventions, as well as the limitations, and provides recommendations to address these limitations. It also describes some important ethical considerations in delivering psychological interventions by telephone. The chapter reviews the empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of telephone-based interventions in patients with severe obesity throughout the chapter. It focuses primarily on the use of telephone-based psychological interventions in the management of severe obesity, either as a stand-alone psychological intervention or to supplement traditional face-to-face interventions.
