Abstract
Recent years have seen an increase in the production of internationally distributed Spanish-language audiovisual material (De Pablos, 2018), a surge which evidently comes alongside a consequent rise in the need for audiovisual translation (Díaz-Cintas & Anderman, 2008). One such Spanish-language television series which, despite its success nationally, has yet to be translated is Allí Abajo (Mercero, 2015), a comedy based on the cultural differences of a man from the Basque country, in northern Spain, and a woman from Andalusia, in southern Spain. Given the long-acknowledged difficulties of translating culture (Nida, 1964) and humour (Vandaele, 2010), as well as the additional challenges of subtitling (Zabalbeascoa, 1996), the translation of this series offers a myriad of interesting challenges. This study provides an interlingual translation for a section of this television series and offers a detailed commentary on the challenges that its subtitling entails. Using Díaz-Cintas and Remael’s (2014) taxonomy of humorous elements and strategies for translating cultural elements, it examines the extent to which culturally humoristic elements are adapted in the process of translation and analyses the specific translation techniques that are used to maximise the effect of culture-based humour in the target text. Results showed that, although there was a shift in the type of humour from the source text to the target text, the source of humour was maintained in the majority of cases in the translation. Furthermore, analysis of the translation techniques used showed an inclination towards more domesticating strategies such as transposition and substitution. The study concludes by highlighting the importance of preparation in this type of translation, and states that, provided translators have sufficient awareness of the problems at hand and that they are wellequipped to deal with them, culture-based humour in subtitling, despite its difficulties, is in fact translatable.
