Abstract
The aim of this study is to predict addiction potential based on negative automatic thoughts and self-esteem in the boy students. The research design was descriptive, correlational and prediction. The study population consisted of all male high school students in Mashhad In the 94-95 academic year, 480 students were selected by random cluster sampling method, That first of seven regions of Mashhad randomly four regions, then from each region high school four, then three class randomly was selected from each high school, And finally of each class were randomly selected ten members. The instrument used in this study, Kendall and Hollon negative automatic thoughts questionnaire, Eysenck self-esteem questionnaire and addiction potential Wade and colleagues questionnaire. The results showed a significant positive correlation between negative automatic thoughts with addiction potential and there is a significant negative relationship between self-esteem and addiction potential. The contribution of negative automatic thoughts and selfesteem in predicting the addiction potential is significant.
