Abstract
Most of the photographic teacher (lecturers) in Tarumanagara University has never used model critics to teach photography and art theory. The survey research conducted on fifty visual communication design students and three lecturers in fifth semester in Tarumanagara University. The research use aesthetic exemplars in the form of modern and post modern photographers and Barrett’s critic model as the latest model for photo interpretation. This research will explain concrete strategic in preparation of materials using Barrett’s critics model to improve student learning’s. Barrett’s critic models will be divided into three steps, description, interpretation and judgements. The benefit of using critic’s models is to make the student know the interdisciplinary between art and other disciplines. Also the photographic teacher can make format from Barrett’s model which helps them in delivery materials, student assignment, feed backs and evaluation. The fifty students were exposed to judge five different types of photographs such as advertising photos, journalistic photos, landscape, fine art and abstract photos. They also have to answer their questions from each photos, what do you see? What does it means? How do you know?, The result of research shows that most of the students have no problems in description subject matter, form, medium, style but they had found difficulties to apply comparing and contrast. Students also found difficult to interpret and evaluate the fine art and abstract photos especially gender issues and environmental concerns. Most of student answered that they know the meaning form human expressions, verbal information, shape, emotions. I concluded that Barrett’s critics’ model is rationally weighted method and effectively to be used for photo appreciations.
