Gyrokinetics is a fundamental framework for the study of turbulence in magnetized fusion
plasmas. In this thesis, we first propose a new methodology for the derivation of gyrokinetic
models, based on polynomial transforms instead of Lie transforms. Moreover, we present
novel numerical methods for gyrokinetic simulations, including a strategy for the solution of
hyperbolic-elliptic PDEs on 2D singular domains and its implementation in a 4D semi-
Lagrangian field-aligned drift-kinetic code.
