Abstract
Agricultural BMPs can help in reducing the impacts of crop production on groundwater quantity and quality through reduced irrigation and fertilization. The adoption of BMPs not only creates changes in the farm-level economics for the grower but can impact the regional economy due to the changes in the grower’s input purchase pattern. This study examined the regional economic contribution of irrigated corn and peanut in the Lower Suwannee river basin area and economic impact created by a possible change in current management practices within the region. The results showed that irrigated corn and peanut provide an important contribution to the regional economy of the Lower Suwannee river basin area. Irrigated peanut generates a considerably larger contribution to the regional economy as compared to irrigated corn. Converting from conventional management systems to a progressive system reduces the total industry sales generated by irrigated corn and peanuts but does not negatively impact the economic indicators of the regional economy.
