The article presents and analyzes the results of a survey regarding the use of financial
futures by life insurers. A questionnaire was mailed to 390 US life insurers, with 118
completed questionnaires being returned for a response rate of 30.2 percent. Comparison of
users and nonusers of financial futures clearly suggests the existence of scale economies
for the use of futures. In addition, statistically significant differences were found between the
perceptions of users and nonusers.
