When light strikes a leaf, part of the light spectrum is reflected towards the observer. Plant
reflectance is governed by leaf surface properties and internal structure, as well as by the
concentration and distribution of biochemical components, and thus remote analysis of
reflected light can be used to assess both the biomass and the physiological status of a
plant. Such assessment is of great value for applications such as determining the extent to
which vegetation is stressed or at risk from fire.
