The aim of this paper is to describe and justify the XML encoding of texts within the National
Corpus of Polish. Basic text encoding, rather than linguistic annotation, is considered here:
the encoding of the primary data, the structural markup and the metadata. A set of schemata
conformant with the Text Encoding Initiative Guidelines P5 is presented.
