Al reacts with SiC in metal matrix composites, resulting in the deterioration of properties. This
communication reports a specific feature in the microstructure of SiC particle reinforced Al
alloy that is generated by this reaction. Approximately rectangular pits are formed on the SiC
particles that are readily detectable by optical and scanning electron microscopic
observations. A possible mechanism for forming the pits is also stated.
