The Sea of Marmara, together with the Istanbul Strait (Bosphorus) and Çanakkale Strait (Dardanelles), is called the Turkish Straits System and it forms a transtion region between the Black Sea and the Aegean Sea. One of the distinguishing features of the Sea of Marmara is that permanent oxygen deficiency exists below the halocline.
