A framework for automated analysis and simulation of 3D polycrystalline microstructures.: Part 1: Statistical characterization

M Groeber, S Ghosh, MD Uchic, DM Dimiduk - Acta Materialia, 2008 - Elsevier
This is the first of a two-part paper aimed at developing a robust framework for the collection,
quantification and simulation of 3D polycrystalline microstructures. Serial-sectioning
methods are used to generate data that characterize the microstructural morphology and
crystallography of grains. The microstructure simulation model and codes take as input a
series of electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) patterns from the serial-sectioning
experiments. Robust statistical analysis of the grain-level microstructures in 3D is conducted …

A framework for automated analysis and simulation of 3D polycrystalline microstructures. Part 2: Synthetic structure generation

M Groeber, S Ghosh, MD Uchic, DM Dimiduk - Acta Materialia, 2008 - Elsevier
This is the second of a two-part paper intended to develop a framework for collecting data,
quantifying characteristics and subsequently representing microstructural information from
polycrystalline materials. The framework is motivated by the need for incorporating accurate
three-dimensional grain-level morphology and crystallography in computational analysis
models that are currently gaining momentum. Following the quantification of microstructural
features in the first part, this paper focuses on the development of models and codes for …
