Crude extracts from leaves of Persea americana (Lauraceae), collected in Rio de Janeiro
and Bahia States, Brazil, presented a strong inhibitory activity against Aujeszky's disease
virus (ADV) in cell cultures. Lyophilized samples preserved their activities even when stored
for 5 years at-20° C. ADV showed a reduction of infectivity of 1.5 log after 30 min of direct
incubation with 200 µg/ml lyophilized crude extract. The addition of the extract
simultaneously with the virus inoculation was enough for effective inhibition.
