The University of Arizona (UArizona)’s Office of Instruction and Assessment was created in 2010 to consolidate teaching-support services previously distributed among campus units. A key mission was to include learning outcomes assessment as an organic complement to teaching and learning. Although unusual to have assessment work housed in a faculty development center, our expertise is a complement to faculty development work. We build on our coaching relationship with instructors seeking us out for teaching-related concerns, and extend conversations to include both course and program assessment. Our experience as faculty allows us to draw on our experience teaching and doing learning outcomes assessment in degree programs. Our work has helped UArizona units develop robust, sustainable assessment plans to investigate and, where necessary, make changes to improve student learning.
