The principal aim of this paper is to determine an effective interaction having no hard core,
and giving the correct binding energy and density of nuclear matter, consistent with good
estimates of nuclear matter parameters in calculations of the Hartree-Fock type. The failure
of Volkov-type potentials to give saturation in nuclear matter has been studied in detail. Two
