The importance of the Lajas Formation as a petroleum reservoir, and an analogue to other potential reservoirs worldwide, demands that the extensive outcrops of the formation are studied in detail. Presented here is a palynological study of the upper and lower parts of the Lajas Formation from two localities that yield important biostratigraphic and palaeoecological data for the Middle Jurassic of the Neuquén Basin.
Dating of the Middle Jurassic, Lajas Formation has previously been based primarily on ammonite ages in prior and subsequent formations. Published palynological zonations of the Lajas Formation, based around the extra-formational ammonite dating, have thus far been based on broad zones using sporomorph acme and interval zones. Until now, no cosmopolitan dinoflagellate cyst marker fossils have been presented from outcrop successions from any part of the formation.
