Optical Fibre Sensors (OFS) based on Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs) as sensing elements are
attracting considerable interest for structural integrity monitoring. This is also true in harsh
environments, like nuclear power plant, environments. The intrinsic safety, the immunity to
electromagnetic interference and the enhanced multiplexing capabilities make OFSs an
interesting alternative to conventional nuclear instrumentation. Little is known, however,
about the response of OFSs, and FBGs in particular, to ionising radiation.
