Results Over 100 peaks appeared on a chromatogram, more than half being under 0.05% of the total sum. In Table 1, 47 compounds are listed and the sum of their peak areas is about 98%. Furthermore, most of the compounds in Table 1 are identified with very high> 95%) similarity indices. From Table 1 it is apparent that the alpha-pinene alone is the most dominantly occurring compound in turpentine and the turpentine produced in winter contains a significantly higher amount of alpha-pinene. Turkish sulfate turpentine has a somewhat high delta-3-carene the beta-pinene content being conversely low. Interesting mono-and some sesquiterpenoids are also present in turpentine such as terpineol, humulene, amorphene, beta-caryophyllene, more complicated longipinene and longifolene. At the end of the chromatogram several diterpene aldehydes were detected with very low amounts. Due to the low boiling point of alpha-pinene its lower content in the hot summer season is readily understood. But the difference in alpha-pinene contents of summer and winter turpentine is not critical. Accordingly, the amount of other monoterpenes and higher terpenes is then somewhat rising during summer Fig. 1).
