Background
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiometabolic risk factors. Many people may be unaware of their risk for MetS. The prevalence of patients with chronic metabolic and cardiovascular multi-comorbidities has been increasing steadily over the course of the last decades.
Objective
To identify critical care nurses' knowledge level concerning metabolic syndrome.
Methodology
A cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted among critical care nurses at Al-Diwaniyah teaching hospital and the specialized center for cardiac surgery and catheterization for the period from November 1, 2022, to April 30, 2023. A non-probability purposive sample consisting of 118 nurses who work in critical care units. The study instrument consists of two parts: The first part: socio-demographic characteristic, which includes (6) variables, and the second part: consists of twenty-five questions to evaluate the knowledge of the participant about cardiometabolic syndrome.
Results
The result of the current study showed that (62%) of the study participants had a moderate level of knowledge about metabolic syndrome, while only one-third of nurses had a poor knowledge level. It also demonstrated there is a statistically significant relationship between the nurses' knowledge and their educational level and years of experience in nursing.
Conclusion
The study concluded that nursing has a moderate level of knowledge concerning metabolic syndrome, while a few numbers of them have poor knowledge.
