Given their structural, functional, and definitional diversity, the collection of information on civil society organizations is critical to an understanding of civil society. Mapping such information includes gathering and collating standardized information on civil society and, often, making it publicly available. This article compares the maps of civil society in Ecuador produced by the government and by a collective of organizations. Noting the complexities of mapping identified by critical geographers, it asks how mappers and maps influence the meanings attached to civil society. It places meaning-making at the center in order to highlight the many realities within the realm of mapping a civil society and to suggest avenues for future research.
