Silver nanoparticle loaded antibacterial polymer mesh using plasma polymerization process

Some specialized applications of polymers include biomedical devices and healthcare
products made of various forms of polymers. For example, patches in the form of fabric
meshes made of synthetic polymeric material are being widely used as support to repair
hernias in a surgical procedure. These support polymer patches are sewn over the
weakened area in the abdominal wall after the hernia is pushed back into place. The
support mesh decreases the tension on the weakened abdominal wall, reducing the risk of …

Development of silver nanoparticle loaded antibacterial polymer mesh using plasma polymerization process

V Kumar, C Jolivalt, J Pulpytel, R Jafari… - … Research Part A, 2013 - Wiley Online Library
Plasma polymerized polyacrylic acid (PPAA) was deposited on a polymer substrate, namely
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) mesh, for entrapment of silver nanoparticle (Ag‐NP) in
order to achieve antibacterial property to the material. Carboxylic groups of PPAA act as
anchor as well as capping and stabilizing agents for Ag‐NPs synthesized by chemical
reduction method using NaBH4 as a reducing agent. Fourier transform infrared
spectroscopy, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and water contact angle analysis …
