We summarize the state of the art in the field of distributed user interfaces (DUIs). Topics
surveyed include pervasive and ubiquitous computing, migratory and migratable interfaces,
plasticity and adaptivity in interaction, and applications to multi-display and multi-surface
environments. Based on this survey, we then draw some general conclusions on past and
current research within the field. Our purpose is to provide a solid foundation for future
research in distributed user interfaces.
