The paper analyzes the response of a silicon photonic crystal lattice under longitudinal and
shear stresses. With the aid of a ring resonator-based structure, a shift of resonant
wavelength from 1.67 μm to 1.56 μm is achieved for a lattice elongation of 0.04 μm. A novel
method of characterizing shear strain is considered, leading to an attenuation of 3 dB for a
doubling of strain displacement. Such behavior of the lattice can be used for applications
involving variable optical attenuators (VOA), accelerometers and similar devices.
