Abstract
A pot experiment was conducted in the greenhouse to evaluate the effectiveness of Pochonia chlamydosporia (Verticillium chlamydosporium), Paecilomyces lilacinus and Arthrobotrys dactyloides against the root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) infesting faba bean. The nematophagous fungi were individually incorporated into the soil at 30 ml/pot (5.64×104 cfu/ml) in 1, 2 or 3 doses before (at planting) and after infection (15 days after planting) with second stage juveniles of M. incognita at 20 ml/pot (100 larvae/ml). The nematophagous fungi reduced the density of M. incognita populations by 95.4-98.9% and were comparable to the synthetic chemical nematicide Furadan [carbofuran] and the commercial bioagent preparation Nameless. These fungi also improved the root and shoot growth of faba bean.
